"Dance! Art and Dance in the Early 20th Century" is an exhibition catalog that comprehensively examines the relationship between Japanese art and dance in the early 20th century. In the West, new forms of bodily expression, such as the Ballets Russes and German Expressionist dance, became closely intertwined with art. In Japan, however, artists like Ishii Baku and Ito Michio pioneered modern dance, and their movement greatly inspired contemporary painters, avant-garde artists, and photographers. This book was published in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Art in 2003, and examines this exchange through approximately 200 items, ranging from artworks by Yorozu Tetsugoro, Murayama Tomoyoshi, Kojima Zenzaburo, and Yanaka Yasuki, to stage materials, printed materials, and photographs. The catalog also features photographs by Horino Masao, Nakayama Iwata, and Furukawa Narutoshi, and draws attention to modernist photography that captures bodily movement and form as a new form of visual expression. Furthermore, it broadens its scope to include avant-garde art of the Taisho period, such as "Mavo," and, with dance as a central theme, highlights the rich experimental spirit of the 1920s and 30s where fine art, photography, and theater intersected. This book is also an excellent resource, re-examining the history of modern Japanese art and photography from the perspective of "body and movement."
