"Bagara" is a photobook by Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990), one of the leading Dutch photographers. Having gained international acclaim with "Love on the Left Bank," Elsken traveled to French Equatorial Africa for approximately three months in 1957, and this book, published the following year, is an important early work. Focusing on photographs capturing the lives of villagers, children, families, festivals, and dances from a distance that allows the reader to enter into their daily lives, the latter half expands to scenes of safaris and hunting. Humans and animals, life and death, and the complex realities of Africa under colonial rule intertwine within this single volume. Elsken's unique photographic expression, which actively engages with his subjects to capture the energy and vitality of the moment, is fully on display, making this an important work that foreshadows his later works. The bold layout by Julian Schloeffler, who also collaborated on "Love on the Left Bank," is excellent, and the cinematic composition, utilizing varying sizes and continuity of photographs, is a major attraction of this book.
