"Okinawa 01: Foreigner's Houses" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Naofumi Okamoto (1962-). Since his first visit to Okinawa in 1979, Okamoto has traveled back and forth between Tokyo and Okinawa, photographing the complex relationship between Okinawa, America, and Japan through urban and architectural landscapes. This work, Okamoto's first photobook published in 2008, focuses on "foreigner's houses," which are residences built for U.S. military personnel and their families living outside the bases in Okinawa under U.S. military rule. These American-style residences, mainly single-story concrete structures, are remnants of postwar history, yet over the years they have blended into the everyday landscape of Okinawa. Okamoto has largely excluded human figures from these images, capturing the buildings quietly and directly, thereby revealing a strange landscape that is both American and Okinawan. This is not merely an architectural record, but a work that deciphers the history and life of postwar Okinawa, which cannot be captured by a simple dichotomy of America/Okinawa. This book is the starting point for the series that later continued with "Okinawa 02: American Nights," and it is an important book that established Okamoto's perspective on Okinawa, which continues to this day.
