"is" is a collection of works by Hong Kong photographer, filmmaker, and graphic designer Wing Shya (1964-). Wing Shya has served as still photographer for Wong Kar-wai's films such as "Happy Together," "In the Mood for Love," and "2046," and is known worldwide for shaping the light, color, and sense of distance between people that remain as memories of the films themselves. However, his work is not limited to film, as he freely traverses fashion, design, and contemporary art, capturing fragments of emotions that drift through the city with his unique visual sensibility. In "is," elements such as chaos, flashes of light, humor, and chance intertwine lightly, and the sense of "existence itself," as indicated by the title, quietly permeates the entire page. While possessing a strong narrative quality, there is a certain refusal to explain, and the sequence of fragmented images seems to trace dreams, memories, and the atmosphere of the city. Art direction is by Tsugiya Inoue. This visual book blends photography, design, and cinematic sensibilities to reveal the current state of artist Wing Shya.
