"Open See" is a collection of works by American photographer Jim Goldberg (1953-). Goldberg, a member of Magnum Photos, known for his works such as "Rich and Poor" and "Raised by Wolves," has long observed people living on the fringes of society by interweaving photographs with the words of his subjects. This work is a representative piece that began in Greece in 2003 as a Magnum cultural project, following refugees, migrants, and victims of human trafficking who left their homes and crossed to Europe against the backdrop of war, poverty, and political oppression. Furthermore, it traces back to their places of origin in Ukraine, Bangladesh, and Liberia, looking at the social background that gives rise to migration. In addition to regular photographs, Goldberg layers Polaroids, videos, notes, printed materials, and words written by the subjects themselves, shaking up the one-way relationship of photographer/photographed, and bringing to life each person's life together with their own voice. This book does not just focus on tragedy, but also conveys the hope and dignity of people who survive harsh circumstances. This project won the Henri Cartier-Bresson Prize in 2007, and this work was also selected for the German Stock Exchange Photography Award in 2011.
