"Portrait of an Island (Signed)" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Shinichiro Shiraishi. Based in Berlin, Shiraishi has been traveling since moving to Germany in 2019, tracing the origins of his own view of nature. He has a perspective that treats both man-made and natural objects equally as "things," and his style is characterized by exploring the tactile sensations of unconsciously created landscapes. In this work, "Portrait of an Island," he poses the question of whether landscape itself can become a "portrait" through landscapes photographed on "a certain island" where he stayed for a month in February 2021. The distorted scenery captured through the window of a taxi and the images that have lost their detail, while possessing anonymity, maintain a photographic momentary quality, inviting the viewer to a place that is neither familiar nor déjà vu. The mountains, sea, buildings, man-made objects, and even the presence of people on the island overlap like mirror images, and the layers of time and stillness that arise there slowly emerge. By reinterpreting landscapes not merely as "objects" but as "existences," Shiraishi liberates the perspective he cultivated in cities and on the move into nature. Limited to 300 copies.
