"Solitude Standing" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Ichiro Kojima (1924-1964). Born in Aomori, Kojima photographed the harsh nature of Tohoku, primarily Tsugaru, and the people who lived there. Through his exceptional compositional skills and darkroom techniques, including dodging and burning, he created a profound and dramatic world of monochrome. His career as a photographer lasted only about 10 years, and he passed away suddenly in 1964 at the age of 39. However, his work continues to be re-evaluated through publications such as "hysteric eleven" and "Ichiro Kojima Photographic Collection." This book, published in 2024, the 100th anniversary of his birth, is a new compilation by roshin books that re-examines previously unpublished works preserved at the Aomori Prefectural Museum of Art, focusing on the "solitude" aspect inherent in Kojima's photographs. From the vast sky and land, the snow, and the figures of people standing there, it reveals a universal solitude and spirituality that transcends the conventional image of "the photographer of Tsugaru." Furthermore, it includes a separate booklet, "Sunsets in Tokyo," containing photographs of city sunsets taken during his time in Tokyo. This photobook sheds light on Kojima's journey, who continued to hold onto images of Tohoku even after leaving his hometown, from a new perspective. First edition: 1000 copies.
