"On the Beach" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. He began creating representative works such as "Dioramas," "Theaters," and "Seascapes" in the late 1970s and 1980s. After holding solo exhibitions that toured the Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles in 1994 and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1995, he continued to exhibit his work at institutions such as the Berlin Museum of Modern Art, Bilbao, the Guggenheim Museum in New York (2000), the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2003), and the Mori Art Museum (2005). This work primarily consists of monochrome photographs of discarded bicycle parts on the beach. More than 20 years after these photographs were taken, in 2014, a photo exhibition including this series was held at the Palais de Tokyo. "On the Beach" is the first publicly released work in this collection, presenting another story surrounding the "Seascapes" series exhibited at that exhibition. This work, too, is part of a series that Sugimoto has consistently pursued, depicting the ancient layers of human memory, time, and the history of civilization. Contains 24 images. Hardcover edition.
