"Radiation Buscape" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Shozaburo Ishida (1946-). While working as a lawyer for many years, Ishida also pursued photography, having studied photography at Kyoto University of Art and Design. He is a unique figure, possessing both the perspective of a lawyer engaging with society and the inquisitive spirit of a photographer. This book, published in 2016, five years after the Great East Japan Earthquake, consists of photographs taken from the windows of substitute buses operating on railway lines disrupted by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident. The title "Buscape" is a portmanteau of "Bus" and "Landscape," symbolizing the book's unique perspective of landscapes viewed from inside a moving vehicle. The images depict ordinary scenes such as houses, plants, and townscapes along the road, but behind them lies the reality of areas where human activity has ceased due to high levels of radiation. Radioactivity itself doesn't show up in photographs. However, if the nuclear accident hadn't occurred, the landscape before our eyes might not exist either. This book is an attempt to observe these "traces of the invisible" within the landscape, and goes beyond merely documenting the disaster area or making social denunciations.
