"Gun Gun Liao He (Signed)" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Eizo Matsumura (1948-). Matsumura has long been active in the fields of advertising photography and portraiture, and is known for photographing Ken Takakura, as well as for his collaborative work with Haruki Murakami, "Distant Drums." On the other hand, his works are consistently underpinned by the presence of people remaining in the corners of cities and a quiet gaze at the passage of time, and this sensibility is strongly expressed in this work as well. After being hospitalized with meningitis, Matsumura's childhood memories were recalled, and he traveled through the former Manchuria from Beijing to Changchun, Harbin, and Qiqihar, taking photographs as if in pursuit of the disappearing original landscape. The heat of the hard-seat trains, the frozen station buildings, the sooty streets and the murmur of crowds overlap with memories of the scenery he once saw in the downtown area of Tokyo, and the present of China and his own past intersect in an ambiguous way. The title "Kungung" is a Chinese word meaning the continuous flow of a great river, and this book, too, is a collection of works that quietly captures the essence of travel, memory, and the passage of time.
