"Bone Lonely" is a collection of works by Portuguese photographer Paulo Nozolino (1955-). Since the 1980s, Nozolino has traveled the world, wandering through Europe, the Middle East, North and South America, Macau, and other parts of the globe, continuously photographing themes such as the traces of war, immigration, ruins, religion, and the darkness of cities. Known for his heavy monochrome images with deep blacks and a strong graininess, his work has been discussed alongside the nomadic photographic expression of Josef Koudelka. In this book, "Bone Lonely," as the title suggests, the sense of loneliness, stripped down to its extreme, is depicted through destroyed landscapes, silent spaces, and the presence of human figures. However, what is there is not mere despair, but the very feeling of being human, still living even while wandering the world. Nozolino's photographs are characterized by their ability to document society and history while simultaneously delving into inner landscapes, and in this book, reality and dreams, memory and the lingering presence of death, are ambiguously intertwined. With Steidl's signature dense reproduction of black, this book is like a condensed photographic poetry.
