"Shu," a collection of works by Japanese female photographer Nao Nakai. When her grandmother suffered from Alzheimer's and her condition deteriorated, Nakai, a photographer herself, naturally turned her lens towards her grandmother. She hoped to "see something fundamental about what it means to be alive." She also wrote: "We, who usually give meaning to ourselves and project meaning onto others, tend to perceive the absence of meaning as meaninglessness. However, the more I photographed, the more convinced I became that 'individual existence' precedes and is stronger than 'meaning'." Gradually, Nakai's lens extended beyond her grandmother to her friends and people she met, encompassing those around her. "Not shining brightly, nor sinking into darkness, but simply being there. I decided to make that a portrait" (from the afterword).
