This is a collection of works by Chinese photographer He Xiaoxi. In her previous work, "A Fragment of China's Youth," He Xiaoxi documented fragments of the sensibilities and urban culture of China's younger generation, and in this book, she further expands that perspective into the nightlife of Shanghai. The photographs, taken amidst music, fashion, clubs, and intimate relationships with artists and friends, can be seen as a practice of capturing the atmosphere of youth culture in rapidly changing China in the 2010s from within. Her approach of drifting through the city and approaching her subjects at physical distance feels connected to the lineage of street photography, and her characteristic style lies in the overlapping of personal records and contemporary documents. Composed of more than 200 photographs taken between 2012 and 2015, this book creates a shared sensory world of a generation through images of young people gathered in bars, clubs, music festivals, on the streets, and in private rooms. The title "Planet Booze" may refer not only to intoxication and hedonism, but also to a generational landscape where freedom, emptiness, solidarity, and transience coexist. Against the backdrop of the process by which marginalized Chinese subculture became visible, this book can be positioned as an internal record of that change, and is a collection of works that brings the city of Shanghai itself to life as a memory device.
