"Gypsies (Third Printing)" is a photobook by Josef Koudelka, a Czech photographer signed to Magnum Photos. Koudelka photographed the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by Soviet-led Warsaw Pact forces. As the Prague Spring reform movement came to an end and the country pursued normalization policies, the publication of his photographs would have meant certain death. He secretly smuggled the photographs out of the country through an acquaintance. The photographs eventually fell into the hands of Elliott Erwitt, then president of Magnum Photos, and were published the following year, 1969, as a record by an anonymous Czech photographer. Koudelka, remaining anonymous, won the Robert Capa Award, creating a legend. This book is Koudelka's masterpiece, a documentary depicting the lives of the Roma (Gypsies) living in Eastern Europe. Third printing.
