"Couple (Signed, With OBI)" is a photobook by Japanese photographer Joji Hashiguchi, born in 1949. Following "17-Year-Old's Map" (1988) and "Father" (1990), this book, like its predecessors, is a collection of straightforward, direct portraits. The photography began in June 1990 on Iriomote Island in Okinawa and concluded in September 1992 in Tokyo, featuring a total of 103 couples. An important point is that the two are couples, but not married, as Hashiguchi states in the afterword, because there is a "free relationship" and "individuality" that exists before the relationship of family becomes more pronounced. The portraits feature people from various regions and professions, as well as same-sex couples and foreign couples, and are presented along with their personalities. As can be said of "17-Year-Old's Map" and "Father," in addition to their value as a contemporary record of the times, Hashiguchi's perspective always captures the social landscape behind the subjects. Hashiguchi's unique fieldwork, which focuses on the changing society alongside the personalities of individuals—their feelings and lifestyles—emerges within the context of a couple's relationship. Includes dust jacket. Signed by the photographer .
