"Kingdom of Girls" is a collection of works by German photographer Karolin Klüppel (1985–). Klüppel, who studied photography at the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, is known for her portraits that carefully depict the lives and identities of people against the backdrop of societies and cultures around the world. This work is a series created during a stay in the village of Mawlinnon in Meghalaya, northeastern India, from 2013 to 2015, and mainly consists of images of girls from the Khasi tribe. The Khasi people are an ethnic group that maintains a matrilineal society in which the family line is passed down by women, and they have a unique social system in which the youngest daughter inherits the family and, after marriage, the husband enters the wife's family. During her stay of about 10 months, Klüppel built relationships with the girls while photographing them, capturing their quiet presence with soft light and subdued colors. The way they look directly at the camera and their serene demeanor highlights the individuality of each person while subtly conveying the atmosphere of a culture and lifestyle that has been passed down, primarily through women.
