"Varrio" is a collection of works by Italian-born, Los Angeles-based photographer Gusmano Cesaretti. Self-taught, Cesaretti photographed the Chicano community of East Los Angeles from the early 1970s, documenting lowrider culture and the lives of young people on the streets. In 1975, he published "Street Writers: A Guided Tour of Chicano Graffiti," a photobook documenting Chicano graffiti, which is known as a pioneering work that was one of the first to record Los Angeles' unique graffiti culture. In this book, Cesaretti captures the young people surrounding their cars, the cityscape, and their relationships with family and friends at an intimate distance, based on the trust he built through his interactions with the lowrider car club "Klique." The monochrome photographs quietly depict the daily life and subtle emotions of the community, making it an important record that conveys the real state of Chicano culture that was alive in East LA in the 1970s.
