Punks is a collection of works by British photographer Karen Knoll (1954-) and Swiss photographer Olivier Richon (1956-). While studying at the Polytechnic of Central London in 1976-77, the two were drawn to the nascent punk culture and photographed young people congregating at clubs like the Roxy in Covent Garden and Global Village in Charing Cross. Dressed in distinctive punk styles—safety pins, leather, and flashy makeup—the young people face the camera head-on under the flashlight, creating images that are more than just snapshots, but rather staged portraits. This early record, capturing from a firsthand perspective the rebellious culture that emerged amid widespread economic stagnation and youth unemployment in British society in the late 1970s, marks the beginning of Knoll's later work on British society and culture, and Richon's exploration of the relationship between photography and language. This book was compiled in 2013 after reviewing the contact sheets and includes some previously unpublished images. Limited to 1,000 copies.
