German photographer Jessica Backhaus (1970-) presents Once, Still & Forever (Signed), a collection of her work. Having traveled to Paris at the age of 16 to study photography, Backhaus's encounter with photographer Gisele Freund in 1992 led her to deepen her practice. She subsequently moved to New York, where she continued to work for approximately 14 years. This volume compiles a series born at the end of her long New York life and her return to Europe. Drawing on the temporal layers implied by the title—"Once," "Now," and "Forever"—Backhaus captures familiar objects and fragmented scenes as still lifes, exploring inner themes such as the fluctuations of memory and emotion, and the transience of existence. While Backhaus has a penchant for discovering quiet meaning in the most inconspicuous objects of everyday life through her use of color and simple compositions, this work's strikingly deep hues and muted tones delicately capture the sense of time that comes with the changes in life. This book, published by Kehrer Verlag, is one of a series that marks an important turning point in Backhaus's work. Signed by the photographer .
