Taiwanese photographer Chang Chao-tang (1943-2024) presents "In Search of Images: The Realistic Faces of Taiwanese Photographers." Since the 1960s, Chang Chao-tang has worked in both photography and film, focusing on the memories and peripheries of Taiwanese society. He has developed a unique visual language that alternates between documentary and experimental approaches. In this book, he traces the lineage of realist photography in Taiwan and attempts to portray postwar Taiwanese society and gaze through the lens of 33 photographers. By carefully tracing each individual practice, Chang examines how the image of the land and its people has been captured in photographs, attempting to reconstruct the history of Taiwanese photography from within. This work is not merely a retrospective, but can also be read as an attempt to reexamine the question of realism in the present.
