"Many Are Called (First Hardcover Edition)" is a photobook published by the master American photographer Walker Evans in 1964. The meaningful title is taken from the Gospel of Matthew, the opening passage of the New Testament: "Many are called, but few are chosen." This humorous and poetic collection of photographs was created by Evans, accompanied by his student Helen Levitt, between 1939 and 1941, using a camera hidden in his coat to capture the casual expressions and gestures of New York subway passengers.
