"Wabi" is a collection of works by Jumonji Bishin (1947-), one of Japan's leading postwar photographers. Rising to prominence in the 1970s and known for his masterpieces "Orchid Boat" (1981) and "KENTAUROS" (1984), Jumonji has made a lasting impression on the Japanese photography world with his unique framing techniques, capturing the physical and spiritual qualities of his subjects. While working across a wide range of fields, including advertising photography and 3D video, he has always engaged in exploring the essence of "seeing." This book is a five-year project that tackles the core of Japanese culture, "wabi," head-on, divided into three chapters: nature, tea ceremony utensils from the Rikyu era, and landscapes of contemporary society. Along with essays by Sen Soshitsu and Ito Shunji, 177 color photographs reveal the multifaceted nature of "wabi." This volume condenses Jumonji's perspective, bridging the gap between tradition and the modern.
