"Industrial Design" by British art critic Herbert Read (1893–1968) is a work of art. As a poet and critic, Read intersected between modern art and design thought, and is known as a key figure in theorizing the concepts of modern design, which extended from the Arts & Crafts movement to the Bauhaus. Based on his seminal design theory from the 1930s, this work was translated and introduced in Japan at the dawn of industrial design. It systematically discusses the nature of "beauty" in industrial society, from the relationship between machine production and art, function and form, materials, decoration, and education. Katsumi Masaru, who translated the book, was a leading figure in postwar design criticism and editing in Japan, and his involvement in the book itself speaks to the history of the introduction of design culture at the time. It remains a foundational document that conveyed modern design thought in Japan just before the period of rapid economic growth. First published in 1957, this is the ninth printing, published in 1978.
