"Hysteric Six" is a collection of works by Takuma Nakahira, one of Japan's leading postwar photographers. His strong contrast and cinematic black-and-white depictions are characteristic of his work, such as "Provoke" and "For the Words to Come." However, after his miraculous recovery from illness in the 1980s, Nakahira began to take straightforward, illustrated photographs, recording exactly what he saw. While recent collections, such as "Okinawa" (2017), primarily feature his later, straightforward color works, this book, which contains similar images, was published in 2004. It's easy to imagine that Nakahira's image would have been perceived with a sense of "incongruity" more than it is today. The appeal of this "Hysteric Six" series lies in its focus on works outside the mainstream of major photographers, such as Masahisa Fukase's "Walking Eye" (No. 12) and Shoji Ueda's "Small Biography" (No. 16). Limited to 600 copies, each edition numbered.
