"Wish This Was Real (Signed)" is a collection of works by American photographer Tyler Mitchell. Born in 1995, he emerged as a symbol of the younger generation, garnering significant attention as the youngest Black photographer to photograph global African-American star Beyoncé for the cover of Vogue in his early twenties. His work began with a desire to present new images centered on freedom, joy, and intimacy, in response to historically associated representations of Black people with hardship and violence. He has created a visual world open to hope and imagination through soft light, pastel colors, and the use of white space. This book serves as the first comprehensive survey of his practice from his early days to the present, featuring portraits produced in the United States, Europe, and West Africa, as well as multilayered expressions including fabric prints and sculptural elements. Rooted in collective memory, the photographs open to imagined futures, quietly suggesting the brilliance of the everyday, a sense of self-determination, and dreams of paradise.
