A Hunter (2019 English Edition, Signed) is a collection of works by one of Japan's leading postwar photographers. This time, a masterpiece from his early days and one of his enduring classics, it is part of the Daido Moriyama Masterpiece Reissue Series, which Getsuyosha republished between 2018 and 2019. The year this book was published, 1972, saw the release of Goodbye Photography, which could be considered the final destination of his post-Provoke career, in April, followed by this work in July. It was also a pivotal year for Moriyama, marking a turning point for him. Following his debut work, Nippon Shonenjo (1968), which portrayed the folk and performing arts of Japanese culture, Takuma Nakahira recommended Jack Kerouac's On the Road to Moriyama, and he began a series of photographs he took while traveling by car. This series is compiled from two series in which, like Kerouac's, he left his car, sat down at his desk, and picked up his pen. Moriyama then left his car, returned to the streets, and then retreated to his darkroom to print. While "Goodbye Photography" marked the end of conventional photography, "The Hunter" could be said to be the work that established Daido Moriyama's distinctive style by pursuing his own originality while still pursuing a proper path as a photographer. Limited to 700 copies, English version (comes with a case and separate English booklet, as well as an edition number and signature).
