"Blind Date" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Lieko Shiga (1980-). Through photography, Shiga has explored the "images" that emerge at the intersection of self and society. After studying in London, she began her career in earnest and has been based in Miyagi Prefecture since 2008. Her consistent approach is to immerse herself in events, engaging with others, communities, and the fluctuations of bodily sensations, while creating images. This collection, compiled after "Spiral Coast Album," centers on the countless glances she exchanged with strangers while riding a motorcycle through the city in Bangkok, Thailand, in 2009. Shiga uses the camera as a medium to capture this sense of closeness without being able to touch, evoking the desires and anxieties inherent in the relationship of "seeing/being seen," as well as the biological instincts hidden deep within the body. The book's bound structure simultaneously embraces the pleasure and violence of seeing, quietly yet pointedly posing the question of to what extent the "eye" defines and controls us.
