Japanese photographer Ogawa Yasuhiro's "Lost in Kyoto" is a collection of works. Having long explored the landscapes and layers of memory across Japan, Ogawa has been drawn to Kyoto since 2014, creating this series. In this work, vividly colored photographs are printed on black paper, creating a series of ephemeral yet powerful images that seem as if they would melt back into the darkness if the pages were closed. Ogawa sought to explore Kyoto not as a tourist documentary but the invisible layers of history that have nurtured and quietly thrived in the lives of its people. As symbolized by the profound silence he experienced at the inner sanctuary of Kurama Temple, his photographs capture the still-pulsating presence of history rather than transcending time. The image of the ancient capital emerging from the shadows quietly challenges the viewer to consider a different facet of Kyoto.
