Okinawan portraits 2010-2012 is a photo collection by Japanese photographer Ryuichi Ishikawa. Ishikawa, currently one of the most talked-about photographers based in Okinawa, devoted his junior and senior high school years to boxing. After attending university, he became fascinated with photography after accidentally coming across a broken camera at a recycle shop, and began self-studying. While working under a teacher, he self-published photobooks and participated in Tomatsu Shomei's digital workshops, furthering his skills. In 2014, he won the 40th Kimura Ihei Photography Award for his color snapshots, "A Grand Polyphony," depicting the alluring polyphony of Okinawa. This work is part of the "Okinawan portraits" series, which won an Honorable Mention at the 35th Canon New Cosmos of Photography Awards in 2012. The portraits, taken over a period of approximately three years in various parts of Okinawa, are a microcosm of Okinawa's originality, from distinctive young people wearing unique fashions, to motorcycle gangs, American soldiers, and elderly couples. The photographer's individuality shines through in the selection of subjects, backgrounds, and coloring, making this a true "Okinawan Portrait." This will be followed by the second volume, "2012-2016." Obi missing.
