This photo collection by Japanese photographer Masato Sakano is based on Ryu Murakami's debut novel, "Almost Transparent Blue," which became a bestseller. Set in the "houses" (U.S. military housing complexes) scattered around Yokota Air Base in Fussa, Tokyo, this story depicts a group of friends who indulged in sex, drugs, music, and other activities. In fact, in the 1970s, the houses were home to musicians, artists, and theater artists, and Masato Sakano was one of them. Sakano formed a rock band and spent nights rehearsing music in the houses he rented as studios. After the band disbanded, he began to pursue photography full-time, eventually leaving Fussa for a while after getting married and having children. However, he continued to visit the houses frequently, and as he looked at them from the outside, he wondered why he still wanted to visit, why he didn't want to leave, and was driven by an urge to learn more about the people who lived there. Driven by this urge, Sakano photographed the living spaces and portraits of the people who lived in the houses. A personal documentary of Fussa, a town that symbolizes postwar Japan, overflowing with its unique charm and atmosphere where American culture intersects. Cover design by Tsunehisa Kimura. Comes with dust jacket.
