"Rêve écarlate" is a collection of works by Japanese painter and illustrator Toshio Saeki (1945–2019). In the 1960s and 1970s in Japan, Saeki continued to paint unique worlds where eroticism and cruelty, laughter and unease intersect, drawing on ukiyo-e, shunga, and kamishibai (paper theater) imagery. He established a unique presence both at home and abroad. This book re-examines the contours of his imagination through illustrations that condense his iconic motifs. His seductive colors and exaggerated physical expressions instantly captivate the viewer, while also blurring the boundaries between reality and dream, desire and fear. His images resist clear narratives or meanings, and seem to present the very impulses inherent in visual expression, gently responding to postwar Japanese popular culture and taboos.
