Sub Rosa is a collection of works by French artist Sylvain Cousnet-Jacques (1983-). Drawing on photography, he has continued to explore the power and memory hidden in urban spaces, as well as the desires and anxieties of individuals living there, using approaches ranging from video and sound to architecture. Interested in visualizing people's places and their distance from society, in recent years he has carefully explored the intersections between historically and politically significant places and youth culture. This work, shot from dusk to night, captures the everyday scenes of teenagers gathering against the backdrop of a massive monumental building erected to symbolize the victory of the Spanish dictatorship. By juxtaposing a monument to past oppression with the innocent bodies present within it, the book explores the complex reality that history is not forgotten but is connected to the present. Blurring the boundaries between staged and documentary, this book explores how photography can address power and memory and connect them to the future.
