"Photography in Everyday Life" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Eiichiro Tonoike (1922-). Born in Shizuoka, Tonoike studied watercolor painting at a young age and exhibited at the prefectural exhibition. He pursued photography at the urging of portrait photographer Tomizo Yoshikawa. He combines a painterly sense of composition with a meticulous eye for the human figure. Since establishing his own photography studio in the 1960s, he has pursued "photography of the heart" that connects with the inner lives of his subjects, capturing commemorative photographs and local families and working people. This work, "Photography in Everyday Life," was compiled in the 1980s, a period when this practice reached its peak. It captures the quiet presences hidden in everyday life—the light in the home, the expressions of familiar people, and the atmosphere of rooms filled with everyday items—in soft light. While eschewing dramatic stage direction, the precision of composition cultivated through watercolor painting lends his images a breathing rhythm, highlighting the very essence of local lifestyles and culture as a photographic allure. This book is the most natural culmination of Tonoike's long pursuit of "capturing life and the heart."
