"Autoportrait" is a collection of works by Cameroon-born, Central African-based photographer Samuel Fosso (1962-). He ran a photography studio from his youth, and through his self-portraits, he has continued to pursue experimental practices that recast the body and identity while carrying on the tradition of African studio photography. This book chronologically traces his self-portrait-based work, from his early black-and-white works to his signature series such as "Tati" and "African Spirits." By portraying historical figures and fictional characters, Fosso critically examines colonial memories and stereotypes of black people, while repeatedly asking himself, "Who am I?" Vibrant colors, stage-like sets, and meticulously crafted costumes combine to create a theatrical and mythical narrative, even within the realm of photography.
