"CRASH/PHASES" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Yukiko Sugiyama (1985-). After graduating with a degree in sculpture, Sugiyama began pursuing photography in earnest in 2017. Her unique visual expression explores themes such as the "collision" between manmade and natural objects, as well as her interest in the non-human realm of space. Using a near-infrared camera, she captures abandoned bombers, ships, spacesuits, and other objects, visualizing the disappearing relics of modernization and the traces of nature, time, and the human body that surround them. "CRASH/PHASES" brings together in one volume the encounter between manmade and natural objects in the "CRASH" series and humanity's challenge to space in the "PHASES" series. Mechanical and organic bodies, past and future, memory and forgetting overlap, coexisting with sharp observation and poetic space. Rather than simply presenting the strength of social frameworks and motifs, this book invites the viewer to the next horizon of anthropocentrism through dull light, textures, and time lags.
