Exiles (2017) is a photobook by Czech photographer Josef Koudelka, a Magnum Photos photographer. Koudelka documented the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of the Czech Republic. As the Prague Spring revolution came to an end and the country began to pursue normalization policies, publishing his photographs would have meant death. He had an acquaintance smuggle them out of the country. The photographs eventually found their way into the hands of Elliott Erwitt, then president of Magnum Photos, and were published in 1969 as part of the anonymous Czech photographer's archives. Koudelka's anonymity led to him winning the Robert Capa Award, creating a legendary legacy. This book chronicles Koudelka's travels throughout Europe, primarily in the 1970s, after he defected to the UK. Here, we find the record of a true photographer who, without regard for wealth or fame, continued to wander in search of a world that resonated with him. The first edition was published in 1988, and a new edition with 10 additional illustrations was published in 2014, but this book was reprinted in 2022.
