"Chronicle" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Motomi Takamatsu (1948-). Takamatsu studied optical engineering at Tokai University and worked at a professional lab before moving into photography. Since the 2010s, he has developed his own unique style through participating in workshops by Hitoshi Furugo. His gaze is fixed on the inconspicuous fragments of the city, focusing particularly on single buildings, meticulously tracking the changes in light, shadow, and the passage of time. This book is comprised of a vast collection of black-and-white photographs taken between 2012 and 2018. The accumulation of time is visually brought to light by the overlapping of slightly different expressions over the course of daily life. While a record of dispassionate observation, the overlapping images take on a poetic quality, capturing the breath and memories of the city. Takamatsu's serene and persistent gaze transforms everyday scenes into universal narratives, demonstrating the power of photography to transcend documentation and reflect time itself. Text by Furugo.
