"Tsunami Trees" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Naoya Hatakeyama. Known for his works such as "BLAST" and the "Urban Maquette" series, Hatakeyama captures the intersection of cities, architecture, and nature. Inspired by his experience of losing his childhood home in his hometown of Rikuzentakata in the Great East Japan Earthquake, he has continued to use his lens to capture trees bearing the scars of the tsunami. In this book, he confronts the "tsunami trees"—trees still standing along the coastline long after the disaster—and quietly yet powerfully captures the strength and fragility of decaying trees that continue to sustain life. Hatakeyama himself once said, "I take photographs because I want to report this entire event to something beyond me." This photobook truly embodies the weight of his words. This book offers a forum for reexamining the moment when human memory and the workings of nature intersect.
