"Prayer" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer, writer, painter, and calligrapher Shinya Fujiwara. Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1944, Fujiwara began traveling throughout Asia while studying at Tokyo University of the Arts, exploring civilization, religion, and views on life and death through works that combine photography and words. Known for works such as "Indian Wanderings," "Tokyo Drifting," and "Memento Mori," he has received high praise both in Japan and abroad. This 304-page, approximately B5-sized anthology, published by Crevice in 2022, is a culmination of his work, centered around the sense of "prayer" that underlies his creative work spanning half a century. From his early records of his travels around Asia to post-earthquake Tohoku, the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong, and urban landscapes during the COVID-19 pandemic, the photographs span time and place, and are complemented by Fujiwara's own calligraphy and writing. Colorful works alternate with serene black-and-white images, creating a meditative experience as you turn the pages. This book, which combines photographs, text, and binding, is a culmination of Fujiwara's creative world, questioning the nature of prayer and hope in modern society.
