"Anna & Eve" is a collection of works by Ukrainian-born, Canada-based photographer Victoria Sorochinsky. Born in Mariupol, Ukraine, in 1979, Sorochinsky emigrated to Moscow, Israel, and Canada as a child. Her experience growing up between different cultures and languages strongly influences her work, carefully weaving visual narratives about the individual, memory, family, and myth. Her photographs, which intertwine staged images with fragments of the everyday, question the boundaries between reality and imagination. This book is a series centered on two characters, mother Anna and daughter Eve, and was shot over a period of approximately seven years beginning in 2005. The indoor scenes featuring mother and daughter together are fantastically staged, reminiscent of Russian folk tales, and unfold with the density of a picture book illustration. However, the background to these images is laced with the fluctuations of relationships—intimacy and tension, protection and independence—and invites viewers to try to interpret the subtleties of their emotions. The idea of "acting" permeates the work, and the relationship between mother and daughter feels like a stage in itself.
