"Street Corner" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Chiyonobu. Chiyonobu was an amateur photographer based in Shimane, Sanin, and published this book in 1977 at the age of 38. Due to polio as a child, he had difficulty walking at first and was unable to attend school. However, with the help of his family, he seems to have recovered to the point where he could live a normal life, but living with his physical handicap, he hesitated to go out in public and even felt reluctant to go outside for his hobby of photography. However, he helped out at the bookstore run by his family and joined camera clubs such as Nikakai, which led to him having his first solo exhibition in 1976 and publishing a photo book the following year in 1977. While working at the bookstore, he noticed the "feet" of passersby passing by the eaves of the bookstore, and captured their movements, the expressions on the front and back, and even the sound, making "The Sound of Feet" a particularly outstanding work. The preface was written by Ueda Shoji, the father of San'in photography, and perhaps due to the influence of Ueda and others, I am always amazed not only by the splendor of Chiyonobu's photographs, but also by the high quality of San'in amateur photographers of that era.
