"Shakyoujin Iro Nikki '92" is a photobook by Nobuyoshi Araki, one of Japan's leading photographers. This book is composed of snapshots taken over the course of 1992, and can be considered a sequel to his previous work "Shakyoujin Nikki." In addition, at the 1992 exhibition "Shakyoujin Nikki," Nobuyoshi Araki was "confiscated, questioned, and fined by the Metropolitan Police Department for eight works that showed female genitalia on suspicion of publicly displaying obscene images" (from the website). The book begins on January 1st, when he photographs his beloved cat Ciro sleeping on a sofa, and ends on December 31st, when Ciro is relaxing on the same sofa and looking into the lens. However, the book features nudes and portraits of women who appear on different days, as well as details of the city and flowers, and is arbitrarily snapped at the places he went to (including the funeral of Kenji Nakagami). Quoting the writer Sugiura Hinako, "In the Edo period, romance was more important than love, and lust was more important than romance," and "Sex was a matter of the whim of the day, you changed partners every day, and it was fine to have several partners at once," Araki continues, "I was a native of Edo," but when he laments, "There weren't many real romantic affairs," we are reminded of the absence of love in his life since his wife Yoko, who passed away in 1990.
