"Case History" is a collection of works by Boris Mikhailov, a leading Ukrainian photographer. Also featured in "The Photobook: A History Volume 2," this work is one of Mikhailov's masterpieces, depicting the reality of Ukrainian society after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Set primarily against the backdrop of the industrial city of Kharkiv, the book captures the collapse of social structures and the devastation of people's lives, with images of dead animals lying on the roadside, people covered in wounds, and children smoking cigarettes and tossing beer bottles in the streets. However, compared to the people seen during the "Russia-Ukrainian invasion" that has continued since 2022 and whose outlook remains uncertain, the images here are filled with smiles and a sense of optimism. They also hint at a firm determination and hope for Ukraine's future as an independent nation. This masterpiece, combining kindness and cruelty, irony and sadness, portrays Ukraine's current state and future from a unique perspective. (Published in Parr & Badger / Vol. II)
