"Ei-Q 1935-1937 Searching for Real in the Darkness" is a collection of works by Ei-Q (1911-1960), a representative Japanese painter, printmaker, and photographer of the 20th century. His real name was Hideo Sugita. Known for his unique works in which drawings and objects are placed on photographic paper and then exposed to light, Ei-Q released a photo-drawing collection, "Reasons for Sleep" (Matan Publishing), in 1936, limited to 40 copies. After World War II, he not only produced prints, paintings, and photo-drawings, but also photo-collages. This is a catalogue of works published on the occasion of an exhibition held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo from 2016 to 2017. This is a valuable book that focuses on his early work over the three years before and after his debut.
