This book is the second issue of the French photo magazine "L'insense", a special issue on "Japanese Photography". It was a unique magazine that continued for 25 years by two passionate women, Elisabeth Nora (Vanessa van Zuylen) and Vanessa van Zuylenx (Elizabeth Nora), in 1991, but ceased publication in 2016. This issue features Japanese photography, which is popular in France, but it is not a commonplace magazine that introduces photographers by decade and edits them in an archive. It starts with introducing Yurie Nagashima, Mika Ninagawa, and Hiromix, who led the girly photo boom of the 1990s, but then mixes in the works of Richard Avedon's allies Hiro Wakabayashi and Eiko Hosoe, as well as heavyweights such as Shoji Ueda, making for an interesting, unprecedented editing that mixes new and old. Of course, it also includes works by masters such as Nobuyoshi Araki, Daido Moriyama, and Masahisa Fukase, as well as Shoichi Aoki, who is popular for his street fashion photography.
