"Maps of Memory" is a collection of works by Masato Seto, one of Japan's leading photographers. Born in Udon Thani, Thailand in 1953 to a Thai-Vietnamese mother and a Japanese father, he moved to Japan in 1961 and graduated from Visual Arts, after which he worked as an assistant to Daido Moriyama and Masahisa Fukase before going independent in 1981. He won the Newcomer's Award from the Photographic Society of Japan for his personal documentary "Bangkok/Hanoi," which traces his roots, and the 21st Kimura Ihei Photography Award for "Silent Mode," which features train passengers photographed in silent mode, and "Living Room, Tokyo," which captures the rooms and portraits of foreigners who came to Japan from Southeast Asia. He currently continues to work at the gallery publisher "Place M," which he launched in the 1980s, and is also actively mentoring the next generation of photographers. This book is a catalog of Seto's works published on the occasion of an exhibition held at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum and the Fukushima Prefectural Art Museum, and introduces the representative works mentioned above.
