A collection of works by Lieko Shiga, one of Japan's leading photographers. In 2008, Shiga fell in love at first sight with the beauty of the sea and pine forests and moved to the Shiogama district of Natori City, Miyagi Prefecture. She established her roots in the area, became one with the community, and created artworks with the participation of local residents while spinning oral histories. The series was published as Spiral Coast (Akaaka Art Publishing) in 2013, but the first exhibition was held at Sendai Mediatheque the year before. Shiga has continued to look at the area while shining a light on the reconstruction plans and human activities after the Great East Japan Earthquake. This monograph was published at the same time as an exhibition held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, on the occasion of her receiving the third award of the Tokyo Contemporary Art Award, a contemporary art award for mid-career artists run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Arts and Space. This book weaves together Shiga's long-standing activities with images (illustrations) and words.
