Forms of Experiment and Imagination is a collection of works by Japanese artist Shozo Kitadai (1921-2001). Kitadai was a member of the "Experimental Workshop," a pioneering group of intermedia artists in postwar Tokyo. The Experimental Workshop, which began its activities in the late 1940s, was a group of young artists, including Kitadai, musicians Toru Takemitsu and Kazuo Fukushima, performer Takahiro Sonoda, poet and critic Kuniharu Akiyama, sculptor Katsuhisa Yamaguchi, photographer Seiji Otsuji, painter Hideko Fukushima, printmaker Tetsuro Komai, and lighting designer Naoji Imai, who aimed to experiment with comprehensive art. The group was named by Shuzo Takiguchi. Kitadai was also an artist who continued to pursue avant-garde experimental art through a variety of expressive methods, from paintings and photography to three-dimensional works such as mobiles, and even stage art and graphic design. The catalog is made up of images from an exhibition held at Taka Ishii Gallery New York in 2015, and contains 16 illustrations. The text is in English.
