This is a catalogue by Comme des Garçons, photographed by Yoshiko Seino, a Japanese female photographer who took her own life in 2009. It is unclear whether she held a solo exhibition at the time, but it is believed to be a seasonal direct mailing that Comme des Garçons regularly mails to its customers. Seino began taking photographs in the mid-1990s and worked as an editor until then. One theory is that Rei Kawakubo discovered Seino's talent for photography and encouraged her to become a photographer (details unknown). However, it was Comme des Garçons' Aoyama flagship store where Seino held her first solo exhibition in 1996, and the fact that they continued to collaborate regularly afterwards shows that Kawakubo appreciated Seino's photography, regardless of her career. This direct mailing shows signs of having been sent from Comme des Garçons' New York store to a local gallery, and the postmark is dated July 20, 1999. It contains 12 precious images from the early 1990s, before "Sign of Life" and leading up to "Sign of Life" in the 2000s. It is also a record of the precious collaboration between Rei Kawakubo and Yoshiko Seino. Envelope included.
