Okinawa (Signed) is a photo collection by Tomatsu Shomei, a photographer Japan is proud of around the world. The subtitle is "There are no military bases in Okinawa, but Okinawa is within the military bases." Tomatsu's footprint in the history of postwar Japanese photography is extremely large. His career spanning nearly 60 years since the 1950s speaks for itself, but the catalog illustrations for the exhibition "Japanese Photography 1968," organized by photography historian Kaneko Ryuichi, begin and end with Tomatsu. He was a journalist who followed "Nagasaki" and "Okinawa" for many years, and was also an outstanding artist, so much so that he was said to be the creator of "Provoke," a book by Daido Moriyama and Takuma Nakahira. Tomatsu Shomei is a photographer who has continued to balance reporting and art, journalism and (personal) documentary for decades. This book is the first photo collection of Okinawa, which Tomatsu would continue to follow for decades to come. He later moved here, and after Okinawa was returned to Japan, in 1975 Tomatsu's Okinawa came to fruition as "The Pencil of the Sun." Signed with sincerity .
